Wildlife advent calendar: Day 11: Grey seal

Grey seals are a beautiful sight to see throughout the whole year. But I think one of the cutest sights to see in Britain is a newly born seal pup still in its white coat.

In the UK, the pupping season lasts from August up until mid December depending on where about in the UK they are. Around Cornwall the pupping season is usually around August and September, but up in Scotland it lasts until the beginning of winter.

The Orkney Islands are one of the best places to see grey seals and their pups as well as the Scottish seabird centre in North Berwick and also around Norfolk.

Seals are often a casualty of pollution and many grey seal populations have been affected in the past by events such as major oil spills.
