Wildlife advent calendar: Day 17: Ptarmigan

In the UK the ptarmigan is only found in the Arctic conditions of the Scottish highlands. They are resident in Scotland all year round, during the winter their plumage changes from a mixture of grey, brown, white and black to almost totally white. This acts as an effective camouflage against the bare rock in summer and the snow in winter.

They are often very difficult to spot due to this camouflage, however, when the ground is free of snow in winter they are often slightly easier to find as their white plumage stands out against the grey backdrop.
