Wildlife advent calendar: Day 21: Red fox

The red fox is the worlds most widely distributed member of the family canidae. During Autumn and winter they will grow thicker fur to protect themselves against the cold. The fox will then shed this fur when temperatures begin to rise again in the spring.

The mating season usually occurs between December and February and it’s during this time that you can often hear the female fox, known as the vixen, letting out their high pitched screaming sound when they mate.

Foxes are very adaptable species and so can be found in a range of habitats across the UK. Particularly in Britain, foxes have learned to live in our urban areas and so you often don’t have to stray far to find one.
